the new black…

i  just realized that we’re half way through black history month and none of us have said anything black…well lucky for you, i’m fresh off of a trip across the former confederacy and due to a quick stop into the national civil rights museum, i have been infused with an extra dose of black and now i’m about to spill it all over ubf…

it’s 2011…and we have overcome…cue the dj khaled remixed version of “lift every voice and sing” …we now live in a world where our limitations are all self-imposed…our own weird insecurities keep us from eating fried chicken in front of our co-workers…our ill feelings towards lactose keep us from bellying up to america’s milkshake counters and our disdain for public restrooms have us missing the fact that they are no longer segregated …and to top it off, we now have a president that was actually born in africa…at least that’s what my tea party friends told me…

wait…somebody grab the fried chicken mic from khaled…upon further ubf review, the call on the field has been reversed…the overcome is incomplete…

don’t worry…i’m not about to get all bill cosby on you…frankly, i don’t have enough time or money to blame us for everything…i do have a healthy appreciation for the impact that a 300+ year slavery/jim crow combo can have on a once oppressed people and this impact can never be undermined…however,my current educational level leaves me at the kiddy table when it comes to dealing with such topics…but it does not preclude me from flinging a few “things we can control” kernels at some of the other issues in the colored dining room…

every fashion season black is redefined…it’s been everything from pink to lace (yeah, i know it’s not a color)…given the flexibility that  black seems to enable, i thought i’d take a crack at some possible “new blacks” for this season…please wait a moment while my list makes its way through the service entrance…

good parenting is the new black… in a community that once believed “it takes a village to raise a child”, the village has gone missing…our young ones are now being raised by the least among us…looking at you bet…scratch that…i can’t blame bet…entertainment has its place…mama and daddy have to be there to explain that see-through heels aren’t stylish and face tattoos aren’t a good idea until you’ve gone platinum twice…

fatherhood is the new black– news flash fellows…they don’t let you raise kids in prison…they will let you toss salads though…if that’s what you’re into…i’m not judging you (with my judgmental face and tone), but i am saying, when giving the choice between teaching your son how to treat a woman or getting locked up and being treated like one…the answer should be fairly simple…

education is the new black – linda brown, james meredith, the little rock nine and many others endured beatings, dog bitings and strong early morning firemen aided “showers”  to pave the way for our children to attend schools that had books that were written in that decade…but 50 years later our kids can’t seem to get the the “lyrics” to the alphabet song unless wacka flocka sings it…but then who would write it for him…i know there is still a lot of work to be done with our public education system, but i have a secret…ignorant parents aren’t a part of the solution…if you ever find yourself cussing out a teacher, head butt a book…and when you come to…read it to your kid…

worrying about the right ish is the new black…there are some real issues affecting the black community and that pepsi max superbowl commercial isn’t one of them…i’m not giving them a pass because they’ll soon be signing my checks…i’m giving them a pass because angry black women make me laugh…and so does al sharpton’s perm…so let’s boycott that too…

i apologize for the super simplistic views expressed about some extremely complicated societal issues, but what else would you expect from the token black post…

elrock…glove covered fist in the air…head slightly bowed…

i’ll co-sign all the major points here…esp the last two…

and i’ll add ‘getting organized in efforts to reduce (racial/economic/political) inequality is the new black’… b/c its not enough to just look out for ones immediate family or community…broader injustices always trickle down…
